Williams Grove Speedway Quick Results: Lance Dewease/Rodney Westhafer in Victory Lane!

Dewease Scores For 80th Williams Grove Win, Westhafer For 1st In 358s

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

5/18/12

Mechanicsburg, PA –Lance Dewease of Fayetteville won for the 80th time in his sprint car career at Williams Grove Speedway on Friday night, taking the lead from Sheldon Haudenschild at the halfway point to pocket the victory in the Lawrence Chevrolet 410 sprint car division.

In the Tool Shed of America 358 sprints, Rodney Westhafer won at the oval for the first time in his career.

Dewease started sixth in the 25-lap 410 sprint main event while 18-year old Haudenschild started on the pole.

Haudenshild was smooth and straight, pounding the high cushion once he got going but saw his pace halted with six away when Cliff Brian flipped on the backstretch.

Curt Michael trailed Haudenshild for the restart with Dewease up to third.

Dewease disposed of Michael on the restart and pressured Haudenschild but the leader seemed unphazed by his attempts and instead pulled away from his challenger.

But his pace was again slowed with 12 away, this time for a blown left front on Rick Lafferty’s mount.

Dewease ducked low under Haudenschild for control when action resumed but Haudenschild didn’t give up easily, instead re-passing Dewease as the pair traversed the backstretch before Dewease dove low in turn three to take the lead for good.

Though Haudenschild hung tough for several laps, he had settled into second when the race slowed for a final time with seven laps left, this time for a blown left rear on Brent Marks’ machine.

Haudenschild proved to be a player all the way to the finish as Dewease jetted away at the new green with Fred Rahmer third, Danny Dietrich in fourth and Brian Moneith in fifth.

Rahmer relegated Haudenschild to third with five to go and a three-car battle for third developed all the way to the finish that saw the checkers and red flag fly simultaneously.

It was Dietrich who was challenging for third just after the white flag that got out of shape while trying to fend off a rebound by Haudenschild.

And as the pair crossed under the backstretch bridge, Dietrich got on the binders to avoid crashing which in turn sent Brian Montieth up over his tail tank and into a flip.

Rahmer ended up second followed by Haudenschild, Greg Hodnett and Michael.

Sixth through 10th went to 22nd starter Doug Esh, Aaron Ott, Alan Krimes, Logan Schuchart and Chad Layton.

Heats for the 31-car field went to Montieth, Michael and Dewease with Lafferty scoring the consolation race.

Westhafer started second in the 20-lap 358 sprint main and wired the field for the win, his first ever at Williams Grove.

He had to fend off the challenges of seventh starter Eric Tomecek over the final 10 laps as the Abbottstown speedster pressured after zooming up to second by the third circuit.

It was after Westhafer had encountered the rear of the field that Tomecek was really able to close but Westhafer played it smart in traffic to hold onto his win.

Brie Hershey came on in traffic late to sneak into second with Tomecek ending up third.

Jacob Allen was fourth and Amy Ott rounded out the top five.

Sixth through 10th went to Dale Hammaker, Adrian Shaffer, Pat Cannon, Nathan Berwager and Nate Hammaker.

Heats went to Cannon, Ott and Tomecek.

EAST DOMINATES “LARRY RICE CLASSIC” AT BLOOMINGTON

EAST DOMINATES “LARRY RICE CLASSIC” AT BLOOMINGTON

Bloomington, Indiana…….It had been a tough start to the AMSOIL National Sprint Car season for Brownsburg, Indiana’s Bobby East. The “Larry Rice Classic” was just what the doctor ordered, though, as East took off from the front-row to lead all 30 laps at Bloomington Speedway on Friday to claim his first win of the year in the series aboard the 2B Racing – Champion Oil #2B Maxim/Gaerte.

“We made quite a few changes to our program in the last few weeks, and it’s really gotten things going. Growing up as a kid watching Larry Rice on television and everything, it’s pretty cool to win this race. I’ve got to thank Scott (Benic) and the guys and all our sponsors for getting things turned around. This is a big win for us,” East said from the frontstretch.

East led from the pole before a lap four caution for Jeff Bland, Jr. slowed the pace. From there, East carved in his line around the bottom while a host of drivers took turns trying to steal the top spot away. Shane Cottle nearly pulled alongside East multiple times over the first-half of the race before watching East pull away as they neared traffic. Brady Bacon and Chase Stockon both stayed in the picture before Cottle dropped back to the bottom and secured the runner-up slot in the Epperson Painting #2 Spike/Claxton.

“I really thought we had something for him there running the top. We had started running him down a little bit, but I just blistered my tire and that killed our shot at him. From there, I had to drop down and try to save second, but it was another great night driving Tony Epperson’s car,” Cottle said of his second-straight podium.

Bacon seemingly tried every line imagine to move forward in the Infinity Shocks – Fatheadz Eyewear #99 Triple X/Wesmar after posting fast time and winning his heat. He chased down the lead duo but could not find enough up high to make the pass.

“We had a good car all night. Bobby was really good all night. I was wearing out everything I could to make something happen; I think I pushed that cushion over the edge myself. This is the first race with this car, so running this well the first night out feels good,” Bacon said.

Stockon finished off a great night by coming home fourth in the Terre Haute First Financial Bank – Superior Tank & Trailer #2 DRC/Fisher. Tracy Hines rounded out the top-five in the MP Environmental Services – Turbine’s Incorporated #4 DRC/Shaver.

Scott Priester Will Take His Wings Off This Saturday Night at Mercer Raceway Park!

Rimersburg, Pennsylvania native and Fully Injected teammate, Scott Priester, is ready to go topless on Saturday night! The ’410′ sprint car veteran and former Challenger Raceway Track Champion is set to race with the Buckeye Outlaw Sprint Series for one night of action at Mercer Raceway Park on May 19th! No wings will be necessary Saturday night, as the BOSS Series is a regional ’410′ wingless sprint car series that tours parts of Ohio and Pennsylvania; showcasing traditional sprint car racing and true driving talent. Priester has a history racing with the wings off; participating in past non-wing shows at Western Pennsylvania tracks.

Priester races primarily in Western Pennsylvania; piloting his own ‘winged’ familiar red no. 11 at Lernerville Speedway and Mercer Raceway Park, while also being the full-time pilot of the Dionise Racing no. 15. Priester has been on a recent hot streak at Mercer Raceway Park; recording a runner-up finish during the last night of regular weekend competition, before registering a 15th place finish with the All-Star Circuit of Champions at the Mercer 3/8′s mile just last weekend. The former Lernerville Speedway winner hopes to use his knowledge and experience without the wings to help defend his home turf against the incoming travelers.

The Western Pennsylvania native currently sits second in the Mercer Raceway Park ’410′ sprint car standings; just 11 points behind Kittanning native and Fully Injected teammate, Rod George.

Stay tuned right here at www.fullyinjected.com for news, results, and pictures from this weekend’s BOSS event!

BLOOMINGTON’S “LARRY RICE CLASSIC” THIS FRIDAY

Jon Stanbrough leads the AMSOIL National Sprint Car Series into this Friday’s “Larry Rice Classic” at Bloomington Speedway, a race to honor the legacy of a man who racked up accomplishments in many roles in the sport. Rice was a winner in all three divisions of USAC competition and is still remembered as one of the great ambassadors of the sport.

Fans can expect some special giveaways from the USAC Benevolent Fund to mark the race run in Rice’s honor, and they will also have special discount tickets available for Saturday’s “Hall of Fame Classic” Traxxas Silver Crown race at Lucas Oil Raceway at Indianapolis.

Sikeston, Missouri’s Hunter Schuerenberg captured his second-straight AMSOIL National Sprint Car Main Event on Saturday night at Tri-State Speedway in Haubstadt, Indiana. The win in the “Spring Showdown” that featured a co-sanction with the Midwest Sprint Car Series made Schuerenberg the winningest driver in the series over the past two seasons with six triumphs.

“I like winning at Haubstadt – it’s a great track with a great crowd, and it’s always great to get another USAC win,” Schuerenberg said after completing the non-stop 30-lapper.

Schuerenberg was also a winner at Bloomington in 2011, an Indiana Sprintweek event in July. Chris Windom won last year’s “Rice Classic” in May.

In addition to the loaded cast of drivers and teams racing regularly with USAC and in Indiana, local fans can look forward to seeing another return of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma driver Brady Bacon, who was victorious in 2011 at Knoxville Raceway in Iowa.

Grandstand gates open at 5:30 with racing at 7:30. Tickets are $25, while kids 12 & under are free. For more information, visit BloomingtonSpeedway.com!

CHUB FRANK LOOKS TO RECAPTURE OLD WAYNE COUNTY SPEEDWAY MAGIC ON FRIDAY, MAY 25

WORLD OF OUTLAWS LATE MODEL SERIES RETURNING TO OHIO TRACK FOR FIRST TIME SINCE 2006

Orrville, Ohio – The first World of Outlaws Late Model Series event in six years at NAPA Auto Parts Wayne County Speedway might be coming at just the right time for Chub Frank.

It’s been nearly three years since Frank has won an A-Main on the renowned circuit, but his improved 2012 performance shows he’s on the verge of a slump-busting victory – and no track presents a better breakthrough opportunity for the veteran than Wayne County, which returns to the national spotlight on Fri., May 25, with a 50-lap, $10,000-to-win WoO LMS program.

Frank, 50, of Bear Lake, Pa., was virtually unbeatable in special shows at Wayne County from 1999-2006, winning five times over the span. His triumphs came in events sanctioned by four different series, including the World of Outlaws in 2006 (the track’s only previous race for the tour) and three circuits that have since ceased operation: Hav-A-Tampa/UDTRA (2000 and ’01), MACS (’00) and STARS (1999).

“Wayne County has been pretty good to me,” bottom-lined Frank, whose five wins there brought him a total of $40,000 in earnings. “I just hope we can pick up where we left off the last time we were there.”

Frank’s recent results would seem to indicate that he’s primed for a vintage evening at Wayne County. While he hasn’t visited the three-eighths-mile Buckeye State oval since May 6, 2006, when he overtook Tim McCreadie of Watertown, N.Y., with eight laps remaining to capture the WoO LMS A-Main, he’s been knocking on the door to Victory Lane this season. He owns a pair of third-place finishes (Feb. 23 at Florida’s Volusia Speedway Park and April 27 at North Alabama Speedway) and, in the last WoO LMS event on May 5 at Swainsboro (Ga.) Raceway, advanced from the 12th starting spot to place second.

With three top-five and seven top-10 finishes in 11 events this season, Frank is currently ranked third in the WoO LMS points standings – the first time he’s sat third in the points race since July 21, 2008, after the 26th race of that season.

“We’re getting closer to a win,” said Frank, whose 93-race WoO LMS winless streak dates back to his last victory on Aug. 22, 2009, at Atomic Speedway (then K-C Raceway) in Alma, Ohio. “We’re not quite where we need to be on our speed early on during the night (in time trials), but our cars are pretty good in the feature and we’ve had a little bit of luck.

“We need to get more consistent, but we’re working on it. (Chief mechanic) Derek (Gahring) has been working hard on the car, and (this week) John Volpe (a western Pennsylvania-area dirt Late Model driver) starts (working) for us (after graduating from college) so having another guy in the shop will help us out.”

Of course, in order to recapture his Wayne County magic, Frank can’t simply refer to his notes from his glory days there. More than half a decade has passed since he enjoyed his great success, so some readjustment will undoubtedly be necessary.

“I kind of know what the racetrack needs (for setup), but I’m sure they don’t use the same chemicals that they used to use on the track (surface),” said Frank, whose 16 career WoO LMS victories puts him in a tie for seventh on the win list since 2004. “I think it’s gonna take different tires than what we used to run there. The track’s gonna be different. The cars are different – everything’s a lot different than it was back then.

“But (the track) used to be real racy, so I’m kind of hoping it’s still the way it used to be.”

According to Wayne County’s Kristin Flory, Frank should be very satisfied with the racing surface he’ll tackle on May 25. Flory, who manages the facility alongside her husband Jason, said side-by-side competition has been a staple in 2012 at WCS.

“The track’s been real good,” commented Flory. “We’ve been told we can’t use the same chemicals to prep the track that they used back then (when Frank was a dominating force in specials), so we’re using different things now and the track is different. But the bottom line is that we’ve had two- and three-wide racing all season, so as far as the racing goes I think it’s gonna be real good.”

The Florys are in their first full season at the helm of WCS. Both have put their own dirt Late Model driving careers – Jason, 35, is a former Wayne County champion and Kristin, 32, has made a name for herself as one of the country’s top female racers – on the backburner to operate the speedway for Joe McIlvaine, the owner of a truck-leasing business and a sponsor of Jason’s racing efforts who purchased the track at auction last year. The nearly 50-year-old track sat idle in 2011 until reopening under the Florys’ direction on July 8.

“We’ve always thought about promoting a track,” said Kristin Flory, whose home in Creston, Ohio, is about 25 miles Northwest of WCS. “We actually looked into purchasing (Ohio’s) Lakeville (Speedway) 10 years ago but it didn’t work out. So when Wayne County came up for auction, we got together with Joe and we said, ‘If you go for it, we’ll be right there behind you and run the place for you.’”

After a successful half-season of action and an encouraging first month of the 2012 campaign, Jason and Kristin are looking forward to the arrival of the WoO LMS. It’s the biggest event of their short tenure, a blockbuster holiday-weekend show that can go a long way toward putting the track back on the map.

“Jason and I are super excited about the World of Outlaws coming in,” said Kristin. “We’re Late Model people, and we like driving Late Models, so having the World of Outlaws come to our track is a real big deal for us. We hope it’s a great race and everybody enjoys themselves.”

Frank hopes he has a fun visit to Wayne County. He’s certainly ready for his return to the track.

“I did talk to some guys who ran there (this year),” said Frank. “A couple of my customers have run there, and Russ King (the 2009 WoO LMS Rookie of the Year) won a race there a few weeks ago (the track’s season opener). They said you can pass, and that’s all that matters. As long as your car’s good, you can get to the front.”

Wayne County’s WoO LMS card on May 25 – the tour’s first stop in Ohio since late-July 2010 – will also include the track’s open-wheel Modified division.
Pit gates are scheduled to open at 3 p.m. and the front gates will be unlocked at 4 p.m. Hot laps are tentatively set to commence at 6:30 p.m., followed by Ohlins Shocks Time Trials and then racing at 7:45 p.m.

General admission is $25, with children 12-and-under admitted free of charge. Pit passes will cost $40.

BOSS Series ready for a doubleheader weekend!

After a successful season opener this past Friday night at Fremont Speedway, the Buckeye Outlaw Sprint Series is now set for a return visit to Wayne County Speedway on Friday night, May 18th to kick off a doubleheader weekend that will wrap up at Mercer Raceway Park the next night.  A field of 30 traditional non wing sprint cars signed in for the BOSS event at Fremont, and series officials expect a similar turnout this weekend.

With one event in the books, the series points championship is scrambled as several series regulars found tough racing luck at Fremont.  Local drivers claimed the first four finishing positions with Jamie Miller of Fostoria, Ohio claiming the win.  However, the tough contingent of BOSS regulars will be out for redemption at both events this weekend.

In an effort to help the drivers and teams, the BOSS series has elected to drop the “same tire in heat and feature” rule.  In the past, teams were required to run the same right rear in the heat race and the main event.  However, wingless racing does not create immense tire wear and the majority of drivers have asked to do away with that requirement.  Therefore, beginning this Friday night at Wayne County, the BOSS open tire rule is completely “open”.

In order to be eligible for the Hoosier Tire or American Racer Bonus awards, cars must be equipped with all four of that manufacturers tires on in the main event.  Hoosier will be providing a free right rear tire to the highest finisher on their products and American Racer will be providing a $100 gift certificate to the highest on their respective tires.  Other bonus awards up for grabs will be the $50 Horne Performance Motorsports “Hard Charger Award”, the $100 NAPA Auto Parts Steel Block Bonus for the highest finishing steel motor, and the Indy Race Parts “Hard Luck” award.

The host hotel for the doubleheader weekend will be the Econo Lodge Hotel near Kent, Ohio.  The host hotel is located just off Rt 76 between Akron and Youngstown.  Take exit #33 and the hotel is located just north of 76 on St Rt 43.   BOSS teams and fans can get the BOSS racers rate of $54.99 a night and the hotel does offer rig parking with regular patrol by the Brimfield Police Department.  The hotel offers free wi-fi, indoor pool, and free breakfast.  If you are calling to reserve rooms, please ask for Jamie (before 4 pm) or ask for Hope (after 4 pm) and be sure to remind them that you want the BOSS racer rate.  The hotel phone is (330) 678-9927.

McMahan Trucks to World of Outlaws Win at Rolling Wheels

Nashville driver dominates ‘The Fast Track’ after getting help from unlikely sources

ELBRIDGE, N.Y. – May 16, 2012 – Attention all CDL drivers: Paul McMahan needs a volunteer.

A former touring Outlaw who has already pieced together rides with four different teams this season, McMahan can’t make it to the next race without a certified trucker.

It doesn’t matter if you haven’t met. After all, he picked up his first World of Outlaws win of the season Wednesday at Rolling Wheels Raceway Park thanks to the help of a truck driver he found on Facebook.

“Don’t ask me his name because I don’t know,” McMahan said with a big grin.

With only one crew member – Cody Jacobs – McMahan pieced together his way to the track, around the 5/8-mile oval and out of Victory Lane.

“We don’t even have a four-wheeler,” he said. “We had to bum a ride to get from Victory Lane.”

Despite only having seven spare tires – three right rears, three left rears and one front – and a couple of extra wings, McMahan set the tone for the SPEEDfest event from the drop of the green flag, was patient on a couple of double-file restarts and cruised to his first World of Outlaws victory since Sept. 9 of last year.

“This is where I want to be,” McMahan said. “I want to race with the World of Outlaws. This is where I belong. This is what I want to do. So to come out here and to bounce from car to car is tough to do.

“This is very cool for me. This is one of the top (wins). It’s not as high as my first one, but this one’s really high for me because I got released after one of my best years last year with the World of Outlaws and to come back and show these guys that I can still get the job done is very gratifying.”

After qualifying fifth quick and finishing fifth in his heat race, McMahan, who is currently driving for Tom Buch, advanced to the dash. The dash inversion was a six, starting him on the outside of the front row for the six-lap race. He led the entire race to earn the pole for the 25-lap feature.

It didn’t take long for McMahan to build a giant lead in the main event. With a twister of dust being kicked up around the track, McMahan rocketed to the big advantage on the opening lap. He reached traffic on lap six as David Gravel was the only driver to stay within striking distance.

A caution on lap 10 for the first of two spins by April Wilson bunched the field together and McMahan chose the outside lane on the double-file restart. He again launched to a sizeable margin before getting into traffic on lap 15. Gravel’s throttle linkage broke on lap 18, forcing a caution and sending him to the infield for the remainder of the event.

Chad Kemenah restarted second, but Craig Dollansky roared by on the outside as they exited turn two of the restart and McMahan set sail.

“We really want to congratulate Paul McMahan,” Kemenah said. “He’s an awesome guy.”

The final caution of the race for Wilson’s second spin set up a green-white-checker finish and McMahan was untouchable once again. He built more than a one-second lead in the final two laps en route to the win.

Dollansky held off Kemenah for the runner-up position.

“Paul did a good job and drove a great race,” Dollansky said. “I think he was just actually a little better than I was in the open track. I got close to him on the restarts, but there just wasn’t quite enough room to get by. My hat’s off to him and his team. He did a great job with a lower-funded team and for Paul, it’s great to see him get a win here tonight.”

Danny Lasoski finished fourth with Steve Kinser in fifth. Cody Darrah, who set fast time with a lap of 16.257 seconds, was sixth and Sammy Swindell held onto his World of Outlaws points lead with a seventh-place result after two engine changes during the night. Donny Schatz was eighth, Joey Saldana ninth and Kraig Kinser rounded out the top 10.

Lasoski, Saldana and Swindell each claimed a heat race victory and Justin Barger won the Last Chance Showdown.

By the way, McMahan needs that truck driver by Saturday. He plans to head to Orange County Fair Speedway in Middletown, N.Y., for the next World of Outlaws event.
